Description
OUR STORY Founders Bruce and Annemarie Albiston were catapulted into the world of disabilities in 2005. Annemarie's father, Andre, had a stroke and acquired Aphasia, affecting his speech and language. Andre was an educator and communicating with young adults was his passion. The Albistons set out to make a difference in the lives of people with Aphasia, establishing The Aphasia Center of Maine and an annual Retreat, the Andre R. Hemond Aphasia Retreat Weekend. Inspired by the change one weekend made in the lives of participants they searched for ways to reach more people, with a wide variety of abilities. Their vision, now a reality, is the Adaptive Outdoor Education Center, having opened its' doors in December 2015. MISSION To enhance the quality of life for all people with disabilities through adaptive recreation and education programs. LOCATIONS We have two fully accessible AOEC campuses in Maine. Through partnerships, our programs take place all over the state. CARRABASSETT VALLEY Our facility includes fully accessible, low-cost lodging for people of all abilities and their families and friends. We also have two yurts used for program space, a challenge playground, and an accessible nature trail on the property. The Center is located on two acres, just minutes from multiple outdoor recreation opportunities in Maine's High Peaks Region. BRUNSWICK Our Brunswick location is a day-program facility and also features the Horizons Center, a fully accessible event center space. Just a few miles from downtown Freeport, this location allows us to serve the most populated region of Maine! Programs range from recreation and outdoor education, to arts and cooking classes.
